Weekend Coffee Share is a time for us to take a break out of our lives and enjoy some timely catching up with friends (old and new)!
If we were having coffee, I’d tell you that I’m delighted to see all the vivid green outside. See what a few days of rain can do.
I’d tell you I attended a local social event that I’d been putting off for months. This Facebook group meets in a local restaurant on Fridays but most nights I felt it was too cold and then in Lent I tried to watch the Stations of the Cross on YouTube. I’m glad I went as I met some lovely people. I got a burst of positivity that lasted for days just by gathering with people.
I attended a Zoom lecture on symbols used in cemeteries given by a genealogical group. I learned a lot. For example in the Victorian era trees were often symbols. If a person’s headstone featured a tall tree, they had a full life. If the tree’s trunk was cut halfway up, the person died before middle age. If the headstone showed a bud or sapling, it was for a child or baby that died. I almost forgot I signed up for this and considered just not watching, but it was fascinating. I may now head out to some cemeteries with my camera. Not a bad place to visit during a lockdown.
Tuesday it was warm enough for a walk outside with my friend Ruth. We walk (almost) every Tuesday and enjoyed the sun. The rest of the week it has been chilly and I’ve returned to the mall.
I’ve been enjoying the Food Network’s Spring Baking Challenge. I marvel at the baker’s ability to come up with these beautiful, sophisticated desserts in any sort of timed conditions. These baking shows are the perfect respite from politics and world events.
I met with one of my online book clubs. Two met this week, but I get Zoom fatigue so I’m alternating between the two. We read Sula by Toni Morrison. Sula had great descriptions, but the characters weren’t likable and much of the plot was implausible. I’m not a fan of Flannery O’Connor and Morrison’s book had that way out their feel that keeps me distant from the story. Still I’m glad I joined the meeting and the book did make me think.
I’ve found a theater that will consider new playwrights. My problem is the play I’m trying to sell has 12 rather than 10 roles for actors. I do wish I could cut some out. It’s a courtroom drama and so I need the victim’s family, the accused, lawyers, a judge and witnesses. Hmm. What to cut, a perennial dilemma.
